Better a Neighbor Nearby than a Brother Far Away

“Do not forsake your friend and your father’s friend, and do not go to your brother’s house in the day of your calamity; better is a neighbor who is near than a brother who is far away.” — Proverbs 27:10 (ESV)
Life often reveals who truly stands with us in moments of crisis. Proverbs 27:10 highlights the surprising truth that, sometimes, it is not family but faithful friends or neighbors who step in during times of need.
This proverb reminds us that God works through the people closest to us. Proximity and loyalty often outweigh distance and titles. While family bonds are important, it is the consistent presence of friends and neighbors that brings strength in the hardest moments.
The verse also calls us to be that kind of neighbor — one who shows up when others are in distress. True community in Christ is marked not just by words, but by presence and action.
Reflection: Who has God placed in your life that you may need to honor more deeply as a true neighbor? And how can you be that neighbor for someone else today?
